I'm still catching my breath from Sunday's frenetic first Grand Prix of the 2020 Formula 1 season. After I had a glass of sugar water to calm down, I could reflect on the race in Austria.
The drama kicked off the race had started when Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Red Bull's Max Verstappen said via Twitter that they would not kneel in solidarity with the Black Lives Matters movement during the Austrian national anthem.
Lewis Hamilton, the only black driver on the grid, wore a Black Lives Matter sweater while the other drivers wore sweaters with 'End Racism' emblazoned on the front.
According to reports, the six F1 drivers who joined Leclerc and Verstappen in not kneeling are uneasy about bringing BLM's politics into the sport.
Shortly before the race Hamilton was handed a three-place grid penalty for ignoring a yellow flag during the qualifying session and started in fifth place. Valtteri Bottas started on pole position, Verstappen moved up to P2 and McLaren's Lando Norris on the second-row of the grid in third place.
Fast forward to Lap 62 and Hamilton clips Alex Albon who is attempting to place his Red Bull into third position. The Thai racing driver bumbles into the gravel and falls back out of podium contention.
Hamilton is handed a five-second penalty for the incident and Norris is now in P4 and within touching distance of his first ever podium finish.
The 20-year-old British driver put in the fastest lap of the race (earning an extra point) on the final lap and capped off an unbelievable weekend to sneak in ahead of the reigning world champion.
