As rolling blackouts continue to be part of South Africa’s story, a new survey shows that the majority of South Africans turn to their smartphones to help them wait out the darkness.

This is according to a 2023 survey conducted by tech company Adoozy Power that examined the country’s power management habits during loadshedding and found that 54% of people said their smartphone was the device they relied on the most during loadshedding.

The reliance on smartphones during loadshedding comes as no surprise in a country that is reported to spend 58.2% of its day in front of screens, including computers and mobile devices.

With people being more technologically connected than ever, a key to staying connected - whether in loadshedding or not - is having a network provider that is able to balance the demand for connectivity with its cost. In these economic times, the ability to curate contract plans that cater to specific needs and budgets, goes a long way in saving money.

Cell C, always the ‘peoples champion’ heeded the call and launched its new ELEVATE contract plans that give you control and flexibility over your connectivity needs and spend. ELEVATE Plans allow you to create a custom contract plan to perfectly suit you.  The base plans offer Anytime Data, Social Data and Any Network Minutes – no more Night Data or On Network Minutes – everything you need and nothing you don’t!

The Elevate plans are available on Postpaid, TopUp and Month-to-Month options for new and existing customers.

Customers can personalise their Elevate plan by choosing one of the 4 options available and then adding extra minutes, data or SMSs either recurring or once off.  In addition, they can choose their perfect handset to compliment to new plans for either a 24- or 36-month period.

SIM-only contracts are also available on month-to-month, 6-, 12-, 18- and 24-month terms.

To sweeten the deal Cell C is giving away a share of R2 million in prizes in the WIN BIG promotion, including weekly draws of power solutions, grocery vouchers, lifestyle vouchers, data, and minutes.

How to win

Sign up or Upgrade to a new Elevate plan for your chance to win, plus all Cell C contract customers are awarded a free PLAY for their chance to win, simply by paying their debit order on time. Additional PLAYS are awarded for any billable actions outside of their normal contract billing, for example:

  • If they top up with data or voice bundles during the month.
  • Purchase a bundle during the month.
  • Purchase a billable VAS (value-added service) during the month.
