If you’re learning to drive, whether you’re fresh out of school or a late-in-life learner, it may seem daunting to drive on your own one day – particularly at nighttime.

While you could pass your driver’s license by solely practising in the day, it’s important to try and get some sessions in with a licensed trusted driving instructor in lower light and night settings – even just in a parking lot.

Here are three benefits to getting in night driving practice when you’re learning:

You become familiar with lower levels of light and visibility

Practising driving at night with an instructor will help you get familiar with the different light visibilities you’ll encounter – from the internal lighting settings of your car to the outdoor lighting options of the moon and streetlamps.

You’ll gain confidence and comfort

Adding night driving practice sessions to your lessons will help you to feel more empowered to take on the night roads by yourself once you have your license. It will also help you get acquainted with the rules of the night road – how to maintain a safe distance and speeds to be wary of on highways and residential roads.

You’ll strengthen your road vigilance

With the high risk of hijackings and road accidents in South Africa – practicing your driving at night with your instructor will help you finetune your vigilance and alertness while on the road. With the lower light and visibility, you’ll be able to hone your awareness of the road and your surroundings while driving to allow you to drive safer and smarter at any time of the day.

If you already have your license but still wish to feel more confident driving at night – it’s never too late to learn.

Looking to help you drive safer at night, leading car brand VW is offering a driving school for the nighttime – aptly named VW Night School. The course consists of a free online version, and a practical course with the VW Advanced Driving Academy.

You can enrol and register for the night school to help empower you to drive safer and smarter at night and know when it’s best to take a break and stay in.
