The first school holidays of 2020 were just around the corner, and Piet and his wife, Chandré, and their three children, Piet (13), Nicolaas (12) and Mieke (10), were ready for the Central Kalahari. It was a short visit, because they had already booked another place in Botswana for the June holidays.
By this time, people had started talking about the COVID-19 pandemic. A few days prior, the government had shut the schools and Piet and his family decided to get on their way earlier – perhaps they could see more of the Central Kalahari. They drove into Botswana near Gaborone where they stocked up on their last supplies, filled up their 2009 Land Cruiser VX 200’s fuel tank and filled the 2019 Mobi Lodge’s cupboards with everything they needed.
Piet tells us more.
