At least six people have died while seven others have sustain injuries during two separate accidents on the N2 between Peddie and Makhanda and on the R61 between Mthatha and Engcobo on October 6.

According to spokesperson for the Department of Transport, Unathi Binqose, in the first accident, four people died while four others sustained injuries during a head-on collision on the N2 between Peddie and Makhanda.

“A Toyota Avanza with seven occupants collided with a Fidelity Security Services van. There were two male officers inside the Fidelity vehicle who were from Makanda and were heading towards Peddie (Ngqutshwa),” said Binqose.

He said that four people, including the driver of the Avanza died while five others, including the two Fidelity officers sustained injuries and were rushed to a hospital in Makhanda.

Binqose said that in another head-on collision, on the R61 between Mthatha and Engcobo, two people died while three others sustained injuries.

He said that a VW Polo with four men inside collided with a mini truck.

“Two male occupants from the VW Polo (driver and rear passenger) died on the scene while the two other passengers in the Polo were rushed to a hospital in Mthatha. The truck driver escaped unharmed,” said Binqose.

He said that reckless and negligent driving was cited as the main contributing factor for both crashes.

“Cases of culpable homicide have been opened for further investigations,” said Binqose.
