A primary school learner in Brandfort in the Free State was allegedly stabbed to death by a fellow primary school learner. The deceased, Kamogelo Leepile (11), died after he succumbed to wounds after the fatal stabbing yesterday - Wednesday, 8 May.
According to Howard Ndaba, spokesperson for the Free State Department of Education, the shocking incident occurred after school. He said Kamogelo, a learner at the WSM Malotle Primary School, sustained three stab wounds by the nine-year-old perpetrator, a Gr. 4 learner from the neighbouring Monamodi Primary School.
Ndaba said bullying has emerged as the cause of the incident.
“According to the mother of the suspect, he had complained of consistent bullying by the deceased and his brother. This incident happened in full view of other learners who were on their way home,” says Ndaba, adding that the Brandfort police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.
The provincial MEC for Education, Makalo Mohale, has expressed shock and described the incident as “abhorrent and a travesty.”
“We send our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and the school community during this time of grief. No words are enough to express our sorrow at a loss of a child.
“We strongly condemn any acts of learner misconduct including bullying, and appeal to parents in assisting to enforce discipline in and outside school environments,” says Mohale .
