Earlier this month, Automobili Lamborghini announced that it is entering the metaverse through the world of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) with a unique artwork accessible only via the 'Lamborghini Space Key'. The supercar maker says the distinguishing element of the space-themed artwork is a piece of advanced carbon fibre composite material that can boast of an incredible journey: Lamborghini sent the sample to the International Space Station in 2019 as part of a joint research venture.

Swiss artist Fabian Oefner has been commissioned to create five unique pairs of art pieces - physical and digital (NFT).

After returning from space, the composite became part of the Space Key. This unique object is limited to five units, each of which is linked to an exclusive digital artwork by the same artist, accessible via the QR code found on the backside.

The artist behind the Lamborghini NFT project

The artist responsible for creating the five pairs of physical and digital art pieces (see below for How NFTs work) is renowned Swiss artist Fabian Oefner. The physical artwork, the Lamborghini Space Key, celebrates the innovative spirit of the Italian super sports car manufacturer, while the digital piece of art hasn't been unveiled yet.

Fabian Oefner explains his two creations: "What I was interested in by creating this project is the intersection between the digital and the physical world. This fascination can be seen in two facets of the project: The car and its components, something physical and real, gets transformed into something digital, a photograph of a moment in time that never existed. And the carbon fibre piece, something physical and tangible, that serves as a key to access the digital experience of the art piece. In both cases, there is a metamorphosis from the physical to the digital world."

What five lucky Lamborghini fanatics can get their hands on

The physical element of the project is the Space Key, five thumbnail-sized pieces of carbon fibre that have spent seven months in outer space onboard the ISS as part of a research project of Lamborghini. After numerous scientific tests, Oefner engraved the carbon fibre pieces with a unique QR code linking the digital component after returning to earth.

Each NFT is inscribed with the title and is individually numbered. By scanning the code on the carbon fibre accessing the NFT, the physical and digital world come together.

Further details about this NFT project titled: "Space, Time, Memory" will be shared by Lamborghini in the coming weeks, including the nature of the digital artwork, the auction house, and the date and time of the auction with the link to the auction registration.

What are NFTs (non-fungible tokens)?

NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are unique identifiers recorded on a distributed ledger known as Blockchain and tied to a digital asset such as pictures, videos, music, or other records (e.g. vehicle VINs). Each token is unique, allowing its owners to guarantee asset authenticity, scarcity, programmability and trackability over the internet.
