Hatchbacks used to be attainable. These days, however, the most extreme versions of this once-humble body style are anything but affordable.

In fact, South Africa's new vehicle market currently contains as many as four hot hatches priced on the wrong side of R1 million.

Yes, seven-figure hatchbacks really are a thing. In addition, there are a handful of models bubbling just under this mark, including the Honda Civic Type R (R999 900), the BMW M135i xDrive (R951 385), the Renault Mégane RS 300 Trophy (R949 999) and the Volkswagen Golf R (R945 100).

Of course, it's entirely possible to spec the latter model well into seven figures, but we're focusing on starting prices here. 

Anyway, let's take a closer look at the quartet of hot hatches that currently bear starting prices north of R1 million. As you might have guessed, all hail from German brands and are available with optional extras that will still push their sticker prices even higher. Hold onto your wallets, everyone…
