Alliances are nothing new to the automotive industry. In order to contain costs, manufacturers often work together, sharing platforms, powertrains, production lines and more. Volkswagen's second-generation Amarok is one such example, as the German firm's bakkie is based on the latest-generation Ranger and built by Ford in Silverton.
Of course, though the Ranger and Amarok share much, they are at least differentiated in terms of styling. Sometimes, however, that's not the case. Sometimes one alliance partner is permitted to simply rebadge another's product, making precisely zero design or engineering changes. Yes, the only difference is the badge.
