  • Lexus' RX model name stands for Radiant Crossover.
  • The Japanese automaker introduced the first-generation RX SUV to the world in 1998.
  • The latest offering features a broader choice of powertrains, including three electrified options.

The RX's journey started in 1998 when Japanese automaker Lexus introduced the SUV to the world, nine years after the brand came into existence. Since then, the model has come into its own, and the latest fifth-generation model is the most sophisticated so far. It also blazed the path for luxury SUVs, especially for Lexus.

According to the automaker, the RX model name stands for Radiant Crossover, with the nameplate seated alongside other SUV offerings like the UX (priced from R857 900), NX (priced from R968 000) and LX (priced from R2.5 million) in the local range. Even though there's a lot of competition in the segment, the RX is a vastly improved package and, quite possibly, the best to date.

The new model is better in every way and features a stylish design, new powertrains, improved performance, and refined luxury - if that seemed even possible. Safety features have also been turned up a good notch, and the range now gets a revolutionary plug-in hybrid model.

Lexus South Africa says that, along with its new NX model, which was also recently launched, the RX will help build the "Next Chapter" for the brand. The latest design language for the RX includes a new 'spindle body', while inspiration comes from the rich design heritage to produce a car that is instantly recognisable. It has a more dynamic, elegant and confident character this time.

How does it drive?

Lexus says the RX's Driving Signature comes from optimising the SUV's fundamentals, such as the centre of gravity, weight reduction, rigidity and powertrain. As a result, a more natural dialogue between the car and the driver has been created. And you can feel this the minute you slide behind the steering wheel in the driver's seat.

The cockpit encompasses the driver, creating an agile driving experience, complemented by its generous dimensions. The automaker has become known for its luxurious and sophisticated cars, packed with safety and advanced technology, and a smooth yet dynamic driving experience that is difficult to come by as much as in other competitive brands - yes, precisely the ones from the German stables.

The improved handling and responsiveness are thanks to the development of Lexus' GA-K platform, resulting in greater body rigidity and a low centre of gravity. At a recent Lexus event, a staff member shared how a customer from another brand refused to test drive a Lexus model available for customers to experience at a showcase. After curiosity got the better of him, and after driving a Lexus, a stout German car-lover found himself purchasing one. His reason is that he has never driven a car which has delivered such driving dynamics and exhibits such luxury and elegance.

A new multi-link setup has been engineered for better lateral stability and handling higher levels of torque at the rear. Improved component rigidity has contributed to responsive steering and makes the car always feel quite solid on the road. Even when driving on uneven surfaces, the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) provides independent damping control at each wheel, contributing to a more comfortable ride, stability and higher damping force when turning.

Drivers can choose between two damping force control modes where Normal gives a high balance between steering response and ride comfort, while Sport prioritises steering response and a flat ride, with more frequent use of hard or high damping force, says Lexus.

Hybrid and plug-in power

Kicking off the range is the RX 350, exclusively powered by a turbocharged 2.4-litre engine that produces 205kW and 430Nm. Lexus claims a fuel consumption of 8.7-litres per 100km. Next up is the 350 h - and, as the 'h' denotes, it comes equipped with a hybrid system, although under the bonnet is a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre engine that delivers an overall output of 184kW and 239Nm. Fuel economy is rated at a desirable 5.4-litres per 100km.

The 350 F Sport also does duty with the turbocharged unit found in the 350. There's also a 450h+ plug-in hybrid model, which will only go on sale from November 2023. This powertrain features a 2.5-litre engine and plug-in hybrid setup, producing a total output of 227kW.

Lastly is the 500h F Sport that employs the turbocharged 2.4-litre unit in conjunction with the hybrid system, with overall figures of 273kW and 550Nm. Fuel consumption remains very conservative at 6.5-litres per 100km. As for transmission options, the RX 350 and RX 350 F Sport features an eight-speed automatic, while the RX 350 h does duty with a CVT.

The 500 h F Sport uses a six-speed automatic transmission. Well-stocked and good-looking Inside the vehicle, the driver-centred "tazuna" cockpit focuses on giving the driver direct, intuitive control, following the principle of 'hands on the wheel, eyes on the road'. There's a 14-inch infotainment touchscreen (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility), full leather interior (including steering wheel and gear lever) and a litany of USB ports for wired connectivity.

Lexus really stocked the RX range with a vast inventory of standard (convenience, driver support and safety) features - like six airbags, reverse camera with park distance control, wireless phone charging, lane keep assist, 21-speaker system and heads-up display.

Then there are also other niceties, like a tilt and slide sunroof, 21-inch alloy wheels, LED headlight and seat heating and ventilation, which only add to the existing luxury factor. There's undoubtedly no comparing preceding models to the new model regarding design and technology. A sure-fire attention-grabber is the almost mesmeric spindle front grille - a spindle body concept that engineers incorporated into the design.

In terms of boot space, 612-litres are available with the rear seats in place.

F Sport goodness

The sport-focused RX 500h F Sport is exclusively equipped with larger, 400mm diameter ventilated front discs and opposed six-piston aluminium monoblock callipers. The model is also made distinguishable by a sports steering wheel and unique trim and leather upholstery in a choice of Dark Rose or Black. Other models are sheathed in Hazel, Black or Dark Sepia (brown tone) leather, with a choice of either Black or Bamboo trim, depending on the trim level chosen.
