Women's Month is a chance for South Africa to celebrate how far our society has transformed, particularly the transformation of unequal power relations between women and men. But what about automotive trends between the genders? How do these compare?

An examination of the most viewed car variants by women on AutoTrader reveals one somewhat surprising finding: Women view bakkies more than men!

There are three bakkies on the list of the most viewed variants by women – versus two on the list of most viewed variants by both genders.

The latest AutoTrader Mid-Year Industry Report reveals that the two bakkies on the list of most viewed variants by both genders are the Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6 (first place) and Ford Ranger Wildtrak (ninth place).

However, according to AutoTrader CEO George Mienie, when one examines the same list – and eliminates searches by male consumers – there are three bakkies on the list of most viewed variants.

"The Toyota Hilux 2.8GD-6 appears in second place, while the Ford Ranger Wildtrak remains in ninth place. The new entry is the Ford Ranger XL, in 10th place.

"The Hilux is listed for an average price of R592 689 (average mileage of 76 416km and average year of registration is 2020). The Wildtrak is listed for an average price of R570 002 (average mileage of 71 649km and average year of registration is 2019).

"The Ranger XL, on the other hand, is listed for an average price of R429 175 (average mileage of 65 862km and average year of registration is 2020)," he reveals.

While this may surprise some, the fact that South African women are interested in bakkies is in keeping with global trends.

According to Automotive News, only 12.5% of 2010 full-size pickup trucks were bought by women in the US. By 2015, that number had climbed to 14.4%. Today, some brands sell nearly one in five bakkies to women.

Research by Ford yields similar findings. According to Ford's 2020 Great American Truck Survey, 46% of bakkie owners are women.
