The bakkie is currently in its sixth generation and, in its various guises, has become a key product for Mitsubishi Motors South Africa.

Jeffrey Allison, Marketing General Manager at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA), says: "South Africa is a bakkie country, and local owners love to customise their vehicles. The Triton Athlete caters for that need by offering a bespoke package to make it stand out whether you are on or off-road."

The message attached to the Triton Athlete is simple – Mitsubishi customised it for buyers so they don't have to. Bespoke appeal For starters, the Athlete is based on the 4x4 automatic derivative. It draws inspiration from the Café Racer concept that originated among British motorcycle lovers in London in the 1960s who took inspiration from motorsport to personalise their motorcycles.

The crux of the changes is cosmetic, and the Athlete is made visually distinctive with a couple of notable touches to the exterior, such as the red touches to the front bumper lower garnish, side-step and rear bumper step - reminiscent of motorsport body kits that featured prominently on iconic models like the Lancer Evolution.

There's also bespoke decal livery on the bonnet, tailgate and side – with the latter featuring the number 01. Also in the mix are LED headlights with black accents, matching daylight running light, and black-coated 18-inch alloys. The motorsport-inspired theme is continued in the interior, where the leather steering wheel, parking brake and floor console feature black and red stitching.

The leather seats and door trim have also been treated to red leather stitching. Same reliable power There are no differences under the bonnet – the Athlete is powered by the range's 2.4-litre MIVEC diesel engine that generates 133kW and 430Nm, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with Intelligent Shift Control.

Not to be overlooked is Mitsubishi's legendary Super Select II 4WD system with selectable off-road driving modes (Gravel, Mud/Snow or Sand). The system does not rely on driver input but instead instantaneously transfers power to the wheels with grip.

There's also an additional Rock setting that can be engaged in 4LLc, and the bakkie benefits from a ground clearance of 220mm. The limited-edition Triton bakkie caters to a select customer base and those who want the very best the range has to offer.
