  • Isuzu has updated its mu-X seven-seater SUV.
  • There are five models in the range line-up: LS models in 4X2 and 4X4 versions, LSE models in 4X2 or 4X4, and the top-of-the-range Onyx 4X4 model.
  • Pricing starts from R784 300 for the LS model.

Isuzu's seven-seater mu-X 3.0 has been described as "indestructible", and this was my overriding impression when I tried the new updated version in Sandton earlier in May. There is a refreshing lack of frivolity about the mu-X. This remains true after some well-considered updates that in no way dilute the car's image of a sensible, reliable member of the motorised household.

The most visible change is the grille, now finished in Magnetite (a gloss black), and these finishes extend to the front and rear bumpers, fog light bezels, roof rails and side steps. These replace the previous chrome finishes and add a touch of classy purposefulness to the whole package.

The mu-X 3.0 range is currently available in five models, all using the venerable three-litre Isuzu turbodiesel motor as found in the D-Max pick-up range. A six-speed automatic gearbox is used across the range, and paddle shifters are now added to the LSE and Onyx models. The range consists of LS models in 4X2 and 4X4 versions, LSE models in 4X2 or 4X4, and the top-of-the-range Onyx 4X4 model.

The entry-level LS models now get 18-inch wheels with 265/60 rubber sizing, and an alloy spare is also included on this model. The mid-range LSE versions, also available in 4X2 and 4X4 format, also use these 18-inch wheel sizings. The 3.0 Onyx model comes with 20-inch rims and lower-profile tyres, identifying it as the top-spec model in the mu-X range.

The LS is now equipped with leather upholstery in place of the previous cloth seats, and the driver seat incorporates eight-way electric adjustment, while the front passenger seat has four-way power adjustment. The seat cushions have also been revised, and heel mats have been added to prevent carpet wear in the front floor areas. On the more-expensive LSE and Onyx models, a "Passive Entry Start System" is available with a keyless operation that incorporates automatic "walk-away" door locks. New features are remote start and hands-free powered tailgate opening.

With all the usual features, infotainment systems on offer are a seven-inch touch screen in the LS models and a nine-inch screen on the LSE and Onyx.

On entering the mu-X, one is immediately impressed by the vehicle's solidity as the doors close with a thunk. These are seven-seater SUVs with realistic seat space in the third row, and entry and exit functions are easily achieved.

My launch drive comprised mainly stop-start driving in late morning traffic. I expected the somewhat dated engine used in this model to be an annoying factor. Still, its rather vocal presence under hard acceleration added to the feeling of dependability in the mu-X's longevity. It somehow fits in with the whole Isuzu ethos of no frills and solid family values that the company has stated is part of its new mission statement South Africa, where "there will be an Isuzu for every life stage".

I drove the LS model on my launch drive, and for my taste, this model represents the best value in the mu-X range. The 4X2 model costs R784 300, making it very well-priced if you're after a large seven-seater with good visibility in the urban environment and good ground clearance for bad roads. Regarding urban suitability, privacy glass for all windows is used throughout the range, adding to their sense of security.

The 4X4 LS version is quite a bit more expensive at R867 600, and you would need to consider some extensive off-road driving to justify this extra cost.

I would avoid the Onyx version with its 20-inch wheels and low-profile, 265/50 R20 rubber, as I have recently been on a trip where an SUV equipped with fancy-looking large-diameter wheels suffered three deflations due to pothole damage. In contrast, vehicles equipped with higher-profile rubber on the same deteriorated roads sailed on through.
