The Hilux's biggest rival, the Ford Ranger, also saw two models being added to the lineup. Headlined by the Ranger Thunder, this model slots in above the Ranger WildTrak but below the reckoned Ranger Raptor. The changes are cosmetic, but the Thunder's greatest appeal comes in the form of it being available in limited numbers, only.

Mitsubishi also launched a revised version of its Triton, called the Triton Xtreme. The bakkie boasts massive cosmetic improvements over the standard models, but looks the part as a bakkie that will take no nonsense. The updates added to the Xtreme are valued at R100 000, but the automaker adds it for only an R40 000 premium.

In terms of bakkie premieres, the three models saw the light and will find their way to South Africa. This first to premiere was Mazda's new BT-50, which will share an architecture with Isuzu's upcoming D-Max. The third bakkie was Nissan's new Navara. Both next-generations of the D-Max and Navara will be built in South Africa, with the Nissan set to go on sale locally around April 2021. The D-Max, though, will see its local arrival in 2022. Isuzu South Africa sources many of its resources locally to produce its D-Max at its plant in Port Elizabeth, but Covid-19 and lockdown have put a hamper on local service providers' ability to have parts ready for a 2021 launch date.
