South Africa's SUV pool just got more competitive as Mitsubishi launched an updated version of its Eclipse Cross.

Customers can choose between two GLS derivatives with two engine options - a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol and a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine generating 110kW and 250Nm, and 110kW and 198Nm, respectively. Power is sent to the front wheels via a CVT transmission.

Pricing starts from R459 995 for the 2.0-litre and R499 995 for the 1.5-litre model.

Thato Magasa, Managing Director of MMSA, says: "Since its launch in South Africa in 2019, the Eclipse Cross has cemented its place as one of the pillar models for Mitsubishi and has contributed immensely towards the growth of the brand over the last 12 months. The latest 1.5t offering with an eight-step CVT transmission is in a class of its own and has been well received in the market. We are looking forward to the introduction of the all-new Eclipse Cross, which we are certain will add further success to the brand."

A decent 437-litres of boot space is on offer and can be increased to 1 074-litres with the rear seats folded flat.

Besides the usual ABS, EBD, active stability and traction control, the safety aspect is enhanced with seven airbags, hill start assist, front and rear park distance control, and keyless operation. A Smartphone-Link Display Audio (SDA) system and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality round off impressive standard inventory.

A three-year or 100 000km warranty, a five-year or 90 000km service plan and five-year or unlimited mileage roadside assistance come standard across the range.
