A recent report from Down Under claims that a 700Nm Hilux is on the cards and that the bakkie will make its debut around 2023 when the all-new Hilux arrives. While this all seems exciting and wonderful, one can't help but wonder about the legitimacy of the "rumours". If true, it means stiff competition for the Ford Ranger Raptor and Volkswagen Amarok V6.

According to Cars Guide, the "GR Hilux" will implement the Land Cruiser's 3.3-litre V6 diesel engine that produces 230kW and 687Nm, and the engine will be mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission. And, apparently, Toyota Australia has trademarked the "GR Hilux" name.

Given that the Australian market is quite similar to ours, it's logical to assume that such a bakkie will make its way to our shores. But, interestingly, it's not as straightforward as it might appear…
