For 21 years, Voetspore has taken South Africans on magical journeys through the continent, with each trip improving on the previous one. For those not familiar with the television programme, the show follows a group of avid off-roaders as they traverse some of the most remote routes in both South Africa and the broader African continent.

For the 15th edition, Toyota South Africa continued its involvement as the vehicle sponsor and availed three Land Cruiser 79 bakkies.

This time around, the Voetspore team will travel along the Zambezi River - the fourth-biggest river in Africa. The river's source is near Ikelenge, Zambia, and runs through Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique where it mouths into the ocean. For this 12 000km journey, which the team hopes to finish in three months, they will begin in Zambia and travel through the Liuwa National Park, past the Barotse Flood Plains (Zambia), Victoria Falls (Zambia and Zimbabwe), Kariba, Mana Pools (Zimbabwe), Cahora Bassa (Mozambique), and Marromeu (Mozambique).

Africa's master

Aptly called the 'Master of Africa', the Land Cruiser is one of the most respected off-road vehicles. Though available in both SUV and bakkie guises, it is the latter option that will drive the Voetspore team on their next venture.

Three engines power the bakkie - two diesel, one petrol - all ranging from four-, six- and eight-cylinder units. It is unclear which engine options Toyota South Africa availed for the 15th edition, but two are double cab models and one a single cab. The Land Cruiser 79 is priced between R642 900 and R856 700 locally, and continuously counts among the ten best-selling bakkies in South Africa every month.
