Burbling along scenic, coast-hugging sand tracks is what it’s all about.
Nick Yell

The Isuzu D-Max is still a reliable vehicle - beside for some overly interfering electronics - and it's no wonder the new version sells well every month. News24 Motoring 4x4 trail expert Nick Yell takes the capable bakkie up the West Coast.

A 600km journey from Bot River to the Namaqua National Park, with about 75km on gravel and thick sand tracks, should give you a good idea of a 4x4 bakkie's capabilities. After all, that's about the average tar-to-dirt ratio most 'leisure bakkies' get to grips with in their lifetimes. But I had other ideas for the Isuzu D-Max 3.0 Ddi Double Cab 4x4 V-Cross A/T.

Apart from day trips around the park and the mostly tar road return journey to Bot River, I also wanted to pit the vehicle against a 28km section of quartzite-littered gravel roads — between Riethuis and the Hondeklipbaai Road — and then hug the coastline on thick and bumpy sand tracks all the way to Brand-se-Baai, another 122 exacting kilometres.
