In a country where bakkies and SUVs are the most popular segment in the vehicle market, we're a nation that's not afraid to take our vehicles to the most beautiful and rugged terrains as playgrounds.
And while most drivers have a go-anywhere attitude when they're behind the wheel of a lekker bakkie, finding the best place to demonstrate your vehicle's capabilities might leave you wondering just where to go.
Now, outdoors enthusiasts can look forward to DStv's new travel programme Safari Roetes with Petri de Wet and his team, which will air from 10 July on kykNET (channel 144). They will take you on a tour of South Africa's hidden tracks and other breathtakingly beautiful routes with Mitsubishi South Africa.
Petri is a familiar face for kykNET viewers as the presenter of the popular angling programme Hier Gaan Ons Alweer.
In Safari Roetes, Petri hits the road with his co-presenter, Vivian Torlage, a camping specialist. Their wives, Tanya and Mariaan, join them on their journeys. Jannie Rykaart, a 4x4 guide, guides the team in some of the episodes.
Petri, one of South Africa's leading anglers who has achieved Protea colours in this sport, spent most of his life travelling through Africa. For the past 22 years, he has been doing so professionally.
He says he tackled Safari Roetes to allow viewers to escape from their daily grind and the office and hopes to inspire them to go on their own journey of discovery.
'... from the Western Cape's beautiful terrain to Lesotho's snow-covered mountains'
"The places we visit and discover will blow your mind away, time and again," says Petri.
"There are so many highlights: from the Western Cape's beautiful terrain to Lesotho's snow-covered mountains."
According to Petri, the Bastervoetpad pass in the Eastern Cape is one of the must-see destinations. He describes it as one of the most challenging and memorable mountain passes.
"This pass has been declared inaccessible for caravans. However, we managed to cross it under very trying conditions with fog and rain. It certainly is a sight to behold".
During the series, the Safari Roetes team's paths also cross with some well-known people, among others, singers Ilán van Staden and Fatman.
Safari Roetes starts on Monday, 10 July, at 17:30 on kykNET (DStv channel 144).
