Following news that popular Pretoria entertainer Peter Mabuse was gruesomely shot and killed at the weekend, tributes came pouring in for the slain businessman, DJ, and MC.

Mashata, as he was fondly referred to, and an unnamed man were reportedly driving from his All Back With Mashata event at Epozini Lifestyle in Soshanguve in the early hours of Sunday when the vehicle they were travelling in was fired at by an unknown number of assailants.

Per a statement by Klaas Mabela, a friend of the deceased, to the Soshanguve police, traffic and distractions on the road caused the driver to slow down as they drove from the establishment. During this time, shots were reportedly fired at the passenger side of the vehicle, where Mashata was seated.

"After that, the driver saw blood from the deceased and sped off from the scene, and he drove off to Akasia Hospital Netcare for medical attention since he noticed that [the] deceased was not responding when he called his name," the statement, shared on social media, read.

"Upon arrival at the hospital, [the] complainant alleged that, yes, he saw gun wounds on the deceased's head, and his body was in a pool of blood."

He succumbed to injuries at the hospital while the passenger he was travelling with sustained injuries, reportedly in the form of a shot to his left shoulder. Police have since opened murder and attempted murder dockets.

Reacting to the news of Mashata's death, fellow DJ Lerato Kganyago took to her Instagram stories and said: "Le re robile di pelo (you have broken our hearts)".

Another DJ, Lamiez Holworthy, said: "At this rate, no one is safe. We live amongst heartless animals".

Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club, of which Mashata was an avid supporter and announcer at games, extended its condolences to his family and friends.

"We pray that the Almighty comforts and strengthens the Mabuse family, his fans, friends and colleagues in the entertainment industry," the club said in a statement.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and everyone that was touched by his talent, entertainment and laughter."

His employer, the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), said it was providing the Mabuse family, friends, colleagues, and students with the support they needed during "this difficult time".

"The family should be afforded the space and the time to process their great loss and to honour the memory of the deceased with dignity," the institution said.

"Our deepest condolences go to the Mabuse family, friends, colleagues and TUT students."

Gauteng police have requested those with information to contact 08600 10111.

Mashata is not the first personality to be shot and killed in Pretoria in recent times.

In January, DJ Vettys was shot as he left a gig. He has since made a full recovery but was in a critical condition.

Other famous Pretoria personalities who have been shot and killed include Vusi Ma R5, DJ Sumbody, close friends with DJ Vettys, and Lesutu Pub and Grill owner Moshe Lesutu
