Volkswagen South Africa is ready for a big year and has confirmed which new models will be making their anticipated debuts in 2022. The past year has already been a big one for the German automaker, with the heavily updated Tiguan and all-new Golf 8 GTI launching in the country, among others.
As things stand, Volkswagen South Africa will launch two vehicles in Q1 next year, five in Q2 and one in Q3. Though nothing is planned or confirmed for 2022's fourth quarter, the final stretch of the year might just bring the biggest surprise of the year.
However, with the semiconductor chip shortages and Covid-19 still preventing the global automotive space from returning to some form of normality, the timing of the South African launches may change.
The arrivals: Q1
VWSA is kickstarting their 2022 with a big one: the facelifted Polo and Polo GTI. The new car will again be built at its Kariega (Uitenhage) plant. The units produced here are for both the local and export markets, and the plant is the only one in the world that produces the GTI variant. The new Polo features a fresh new design, a reworked interior, and technologies and features that will undoubtedly place it head and shoulders above the competition.

The other car to make its debut is the all-new Caddy. First launched in South Africa in 1992, more than 35 000 units have found homes and will VWSA hope that the fifth generation continues with that same success. The new Caddy is designed for both lifestyle and workhorse applications and will be available with a 1.6-litre petrol and 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine.
The arrivals: Q2
2022's second quarter will be VWSA's busiest as they look to launch five(!) new models in the market. Headlining the schedule is the Golf 8 R and new Tiguan R. These two performance models will headline their respective ranges, and can we be sure that they will continue to impress as far as dynamic abilities are concerned. The Tiguan R is the first true performance model added to the Tiguan line-up, and if our experience of the 2.0 TSI 4Motion R-Line is anything to go by, then this new Tiguan R might just be the pick of the litter.
Other models to launch in this time include the facelifted Tiguan AllSpace, the new Taigo, and facelifted T-Roc.
The arrivals: Q3
Q3 seems to be the easiest quarter for VWSA concerning vehicle launches. The only vehicle confirmed for launch is a new, unknown 'Jetta-sized' sedan which will be built in India. The current Polo Sedan is a highly celebrated one, offering buyers good value for their money. It is the only sedan in VWSA's line-up, but will be replaced by the newcomer in 2022. Not much is known about the new sedan, but we know that the car will be assembled and imported from India.

And the Amarok?
This is perhaps the biggest news everyone is waiting for, but Volkswagen SA can only confirm when the new Amarok will launch in 2022. As we are aware by now, Volkswagen and Ford signed a new agreement that will see the two automotive giants produce their respective bakkies, the Amarok and Ranger, alongside each other. And yes, both will bakkies will be built in South Africa.
Ford already revealed its all-new Ranger, but Volkswagen is yet to do so with its next Amarok. The new Ranger is scheduled to launch in Q4 next year, which won't make it impossible for the all-new Amarok to be launched around the same time.
