The regional finals of the eLaLiga Santander Fan Cup will kick off this weekend. At stake is a ticket to the grand final in Madrid in May, where eight players will advance and battle it out for glory in the Spanish city.

South Africa is well represented, with four renowned egamers set to take on opponents from Egypt.

Representing Mzansi are Kaylan Moodley, who is a two-time African champion; Orlando Pirates eSports players Zaakir Abdulla and Mogamad Zuhayr Abrahams; and Masoom Fakie, a Bravado Gaming Fifa player.

The first stage of the Fan Cup, the official amateur EA Sports Fifa 21 tournament organised internationally by LaLiga and Electronic Arts, concluded with unprecedented figures across the 31 online tournaments.

The latest round of competition comes after the conclusion of the national tournaments that saw more than 21 000 players from 16 countries taking part in November and December, with 40 players emerging who will go head-to-head in the regional finals.

The North and South America regional finals took place last month.

North America involved the US, Colombia and Mexico, while the south featured participants from Brazil, Ecuador and Argentina.

The African regional final between Egypt and South Africa will run from Saturday to Sunday.

Finals in Europe and the Middle East will follow on the weekend of February 27 and 28.

Next month will see South Korea, China, Thailand and Vietnam facing off in the Asian final.

Meanwhile, eLaliga has announced a partnership with Galaxy Racer, which will exclusively broadcast the event.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Asian regional finals will be the only ones held in person. In the remaining territories, the competition will be adapted to a fully online format to ensure the safety of all entrants without compromising on the excitement and drama on the road to the grand final.

The grand final in Madrid

The eight finalists advancing from the regional finals will face off in the grand final in Madrid on May 8.

This will depend on the pandemic’s evolution in Spain, where the finalists will compete for €10 000 (R150 000) while enjoying an eLaLiga VIP experience.

All the matches will be streamed on official eLaLiga channels on Twitch, a live streaming service for gamers.
