Following our story of GWM launching their new P Series double cab bakkie in South Africa, Wheels24 readers stepped up to the plate and gave their two cents on the matter.
While some of the feedback were only one-word responses, others were quite detailed and comprehensive. It's the latter we’ll share today, as they are direct and to the point.
But first, a recap of the P Series.
This new bakkie is Great Wall Motor’s answer to the very popular Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. It comes fitted with a host of standard features that the automaker hopes will make it a hit in the leisure segment of the bakkie market.

As such, the P Series is built on the Haval H9’s platform, which, we believe, will give it a ride quality akin to that of an SUV.
The P Series will be powered a solitary engine: a turbocharged 2.0-litre motor that produces 140kW and 360Nm. An eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox sends power to all four wheels. It is believed the bakkie will be fitted with three differential locks, which should give it a serious advantage in off-road conditions.

Readers' response
Hein Smal gave a thorough response to the P Series arrival and touched on a few important aspects.
He wrote: "I think the real question, once it is launched here in South Africa, is going to be whether I buy the new Chinese offering, or if I should rather settle for a used Ranger or Hilux - which is maybe one year old ?
"I have my doubts that the farmers will buy this bakkie. I think city folk who like to escapes into the country side will maybe show more interest in the P-Series.
"Factors to consider would be the devaluation against a used Hilux or Ranger, and how many dealers are available across South Africa - especially outside of the city. I mean, let's be frank: one reason why the Ranger and Hilux sell so well is because they have a dealer in most towns.
"I do not think the P-Series would be any threat to the bakkie market leaders, and I would be very amazed if it sells in huge volumes."

Robin Peters said: "Yes, I know the P series will make a huge impact on South African bakkie market! Not only price, but everything that goes with it. The previous models have proved to be good value for money!"
Johnny Wolfswinkel highlighted the importance of price: "It will only be competitive if they price it right. If it is the same price as a fairly new second-hand Hilux or Ranger, most people will still opt rather for used from the leading brands. My opinion of course."
Jan Ackerman, a GWM Steed owner, said: "This is one of the most beautiful double cab bakkies I have ever seen. I would have liked to own one like this, because I already have a (Steed) mpi 2.2 and would have liked to upgrade. Can't wait to see more about the P Series."
Johan Botha made an important point regarding the engine, saying: "The engine, as with the Haval range, will be thirsty. People in this country (RSA) still associate leisure bakkies with turbo diesels. I think the price-point will ultimately be the deciding factor. Good luck to them.
"I do not think Toyota is overly concerned at this point."
