Who would have thought that cellphones would evolve so much that people are more worried about losing their phone as opposed to a wallet or purse?

The fact is that cellphones have become a dire necessity with people spending most of their time scrolling through news feeds, being active on social media and even playing games.

Whether it's used to pass the time or even negate an awkward situation, mobile games are the go-to source of entertainment when your Playstation or Xbox is not available.

Are you currently playing a racing game that you enjoy, that is not on the list? Email us.

You have to go as far back as 2000 with the launch of the famous Nokia 3310 when people first got a taste of mobile gaming with the green and black snake game. But these days, a quick visit to an app store will have you playing a new game in just a few minutes.

Oh how times have changed.

A popular genre

Racing games have become one of the most-played genres on mobile devices, alongside football, with there being a host of titles for players to choose from.

Some games require an internet connection to play online, while others can be enjoyed offline without you having to use your mobile data.

Graphics, realism and attention to detail have also seen a significant improvement with developers wanting to give the player more or less the same experience as you would on a gaming console.

The cool thing about racing games, in particular, is the fact that there are plenty of titles to choose from. Some are quite big, while others hardly take up any space at all.

Some might prefer good-old-fashioned drag racing while drifting or circuit events might interest others. It all boils down to what you prefer playing, and because most of them are free, you can test each one out.

Check out some of these racing titles that can be downloaded for free on the Google Play! app store:

1. CSR Racing 2 - 2.1GB

This drag racing game might be the biggest out of the lot in terms of download size, but when you play it, you can see why.

The attention to detail of the cars and the online mode make it a fully immersive experience.

2. GT Racing 2 - 1GB

The game features a total of 30 manufacturers where drivers can compete in various racing events that include classic races, duels, knockouts and overtakes.

The game also offers online and multiplayer functionality, and in addition, there is a total of 71 licensed cars as well as 13 tracks to prove who has the fastest thing on four wheels.

3. CarX Drift Racing 2 - 1.3GB

For those that want to break away from the norm that is drag racing, this game focuses on going sideways. It is also sizeable like the CSR series, and the graphics are on par also.

Players have to balance steering, brake and throttle functions just as you would in a real car. There is also space for endless modifications and tuning to be carried out on some of the most popular cars.

4. Drag Battle - 139MB

This is a full-out drag racing game that can be downloaded for free and played offline. It features some of the most iconic cars, both old and new, where players can customise the looks and performance aspects.

One would think a game its size would lack in quality, but that is not the case at all and is definitely worth a download.

5. Asphalt 8 - 77MB

Asphalt has long been a popular game in the racing genre and is also one of the Editor's choice options. Players can choose to race with either a car or motorbike to race on 40 different tracks.

From career to drift and limited time events, there is no shortage of things to do, and the only thing you should worry about is that you have to charge your phone's battery from playing it too much.

6. Drift Max Pro - 345MB

Yet another drifter makes its way on the list and serves as storage sensitive option. Drift Max Pro is a free-to-play game and doesn’t require an internet connection once it is installed.

Compete with racers online, tackle the career mode or take part in the contender events where cars and cash prizes are up for grabs as you progress through the game.

7. Need for Speed No Limits - 56MB

Need for Speed title is another one of the Editor's choice picks and for a mere 56MB, you can have it on your phone. Just like other games in the series, you can modify and take part in numerous events.

Unfortunately this game requires a consistent internet connection.
