• Two performance wagons take each other on in a drag race.

• The BMW M340i is offered in wagon form in the UK, South Africa only receives the sedan.

• Both cars are powered by turbocharged six-cylinder engines and employ four-wheel drive systems.

We're fans of station wagons, and even more so when they're of the performance persuasion. And that's exactly what we have in this drag race.

The recently-launched BMW M340i is offered in Touring form in the United Kingdom, and only in sedan guise in South Africa. In fact we drove it a few weeks ago, so have a look at how we rate the current flagship 3 Series.

Power is noted at 285kW and 500Nm, with 0-100km/h taking just 4.4 seconds says BMW. Top speed is pegged at 250km/h. All that power is channeled via an eight-speed sports automatic transmission to all four wheels, BMW's xDrive system.

Parked next to it is another four-wheel drive performance wagon, or as Audi calls its RS4, an Avant. The 2.9-litre V6 turbocharged engine in the Audi produces 331kW and 600Nm via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Top speed is 250km/h.

Both cars employ launch control systems to get off the line with the least possible interference and rocket onto their respective top speeds.

It's a station wagon showdown in this drag race as the BMW M340i lines up against the more powerful Audi RS4. Trust us, you don't want to miss this race.

Carwow says: "It's time for an estate showdown... BMW M340i Touring vs Audi RS4! On the face of it, you might think this will be an easy win for the Audi, given it can put down 331kW and 600Nm, which easily eclipses the 285kW and 500Nm of the M340i. But will it be such a clear-cut victory?
