2021 will be a big year for Nissan South Africa as the automaker readies to, for the first time, produce the Navara locally. The current Navara was launched locally in 2017 and came to market with a unique suspension setup: a five-link coil suspension at the rear.
It was a completely new approach for the South African market, as the bakkies in our market are all fitted leaf springs. But for the Navara, its coil suspension meant that it had the ride quality befitting an SUV - or so it was supposed to be. The Navara had a good ride quality, thanks to this type of setup, but it never translated in the bakkie having the best ride quality when the loading bay was packed.
With the new bakkie on the horizon, Nissan will be addressing several of these issues and does the automaker hope that the bakkie will find greater success in our market. In the above video, Nissan documents the last eight decades of producing bakkies and ends it off with a dark silhouette of the upcoming Navara.

While information on the new bakkie is still relatively scarce, we do know that the bakkie will have a new front end and grille, along with new headlights. The headlights, as gathered by the image, features four individual LEAD clusters, surrounded by daytime-running LEDs. On the engine front, it is expected that Nissan will continue with the 2.3-litre turbo diesel engine, but it is rumoured that Nissan will add a turbo to improve performance and fuel efficiency.
More information on the new Nissan Navara will be announced on 5 November 2020 when the bakkie is revealed. Currently, in South Africa, the Navara line-up consists of 10 models, all powered by the 2.3-litre engine. Power outputs across the range are rated at 140kW and 450Nm. The engine is mated to either a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox. The bakkie is available in either rear-wheel-drive or 4x4 configuration.
The new 2021 Nissan Navara will launch in South Africa in April next year.
