Mercedes-Benz X-Class the most powerful bakkie in SA

Ford's 2.0-litre bi-turbo engine makes the cut

Listing based on power output

As South Africans, we love our bakkies. And if the bakkie carries the badge of our favourite automaker, then there is nothing stopping us from enquiring about it and perhaps even get the sales process underway.

The pool of bakkies in our market range from ones using four-cylinder motors to eight-cylinders and each bakkie has its unique power output. The most potent bakkie is the Mercedes-Benz X-Class, with power outputs rated at 190kW and 550Nm from its 3.0-litre V6 engine. It will hold onto that title until the 190kW/580Nm Volkswagen Amarok arrives later this year.

Other bakkies with strong, powerful engines include Ford's Ranger that's powered by a bi-turbo 2.0-litre engine, as well as the 4.0-litre V6 Toyota Hilux.

We've also included the base-price of these respective engines, but keep in mind that 1) the respective bakkies carry a much lower entry-price for their ranges, and 2) price increases are scheduled for 1 July 2020 across the entire South African carpool.

Our list below is based on the kilowatt output of each bakkie, from highest to lowest.
