WATCH: New 2019 VW Golf 8 spotted testing in SA

The eighth-generation of Volkswagen's Golf is only scheduled to enter production in June 2019 and likely to make its official debut at the 2019 Frankfurt motor show in July.

Wheels24 has footage of an undisguised prototype seen on South African roads. Two models, one black and the other silver, were captured on the N2 by Capetonian Samuel Dodgen.

Immediately one can see that the new car is wider and sleeker compared to the current seventh-generation.

These test units sported Northern Cape (NC) license plates and were likely undergoing hot weather testing in the arid region, a common place for manufacturers to test pre-production vehicles.

The new Golf will be built at the firm's main factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, the company announced earlier in January 2019.

Details are sketchy about which models will be available in South Africa but the new Golf is likely to use less fuel than the current generation, offer more connectivity, and push the boundaries of autonomous driving.

When pressed for comment, VWSA was tight-lipped and simply replied: "Unfortunately, we don’t have any information on the models in question."
