SA's top-selling hatchbacks: VW Golf rates as the most popular second-hand car in 2018

Volkswagen is the brand with the most finalists out of the 11 categories in which brands will compete for the Gumtree Pre-Owned Vehicle Awards for 2018.

They have five models representing them with an average value retention percentage ranging from 84% according to data provided by TransUnion Auto Information Services.

These might surprise you

There was no surprise seeing Toyota here as they generally have positive resale and appreciation values. The model with the highest value retention is the Aygo with 89% followed by the Toyota Etios with 88%.

You would normally find Hyundai on any list but according to TransUnion, their average percentage values aren't as good when compared to a few of their other rivals.

The rest of the list made up of Renault, Mazda, Opel, Kia, Datsun and Tata.
