Our oceans and our planet are polluted with plastic and rubbish, killing our environment much faster than we realise. We might not all be able to physically help tidy up, but we can contribute by driving less harmful cars.

September 21 marks World Cleanup Day so the lovely folk at AutoTrader SA has put together a list of the 10 greenest cars available in South Africa.

Last year saw 18-million people across 157 countries and territories do their thing for the environment by participating in the biggest waste collection day in human history.

South African motorists can get into the environmental swing of things too – not just by collecting waste but also by minimising emissions. The dangers of air pollution should never be discounted.

According to a recent study published in the European Heart Journal, air pollution is now a greater health risk than cigarette smoking.

And, according to that study, air pollution is killing 8.8-million people a year. In 2015, 7.2-million people died as a result of smoking.

But how can motorists make a difference to the massive problem of air pollution?

"By buying a "green car" says George Mienie, CEO of AutoTrader SA.

"Selecting a car with low CO2 emissions isn’t only good for the environment. It is also good for your back pocket,” notes Mienie.

"This is because all new vehicles with CO2 emissions exceeding 120g/km in South Africa are subject to an Environmental Levy paid by car manufacturers, a cost which ultimately finds its way into pockets of consumers."

So, which vehicles do not exceed the 120 g/km?
