Automatic (or Direct Shift transmission) are becoming a permanent fixture in most new cars, with many automakers ditching manual transmissions entirely for performance models.

More and more manufacturers are slowly making the transition from manual to automatic in a bid to improve performance and fuel efficiency with a range of auto options.

Moving forward

The overall driving experience is made easier with just two pedals, allowing more control of the car without having to tug at the gear lever. Performance cars such as the VW Golf GTI or Lamborghini Huracan are equipped with shift paddles on the steering wheel.

Depending on the brand, buyer's can choose between sequential, CVT or dual clutch variants, each with its own pros and cons. A small downside is that automatic cars tend to use more fuel.

While manual transmissions is still very much alive, it is slowly being overtaken with more people leaning to its counterpart.
