WATCH | The new Ford Focus ST tested

Sport compacts are making a comeback. Whether newcomers, like Hyundai's i30N, or long-standing favorites, like VW's Golf GTI, they all face stiff competition from the likes of the Ford Focus ST. The 4th generation hot hatch was launched in 2019.

The Ford Performance-developed all-new Focus ST enhanced with advanced sports technologies is available in Europe and  other markets in five-door hatch and estate body (only offered in Europe) styles. 'Sadly we won't see it arrive here in SA,' says Wheels24's Janine Van der Post.

"Ford has revealed that SA will not be receiving the new Ford Fiesta ST, so the ST-line in this range is supposed to make up for that heartbreaking news; The Focus ST is also still under consideration but will be confirmed closer to the time of launch in 2019/2020 if it really won't be coming our way or not."

The new ST uses a bigger engine than the previous generation's 2.0-litre and now employs a 205kW and 420Nm 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbocharged engine with twin-scroll turbo and anti-lag.

The automaker says it's the first time the ST uses a first front-wheel drive electronic limited-slip differential which improves traction and stability.
