BMW has finally pulled back the curtain on its next-generation M3 and M4. The sports cars, featuring the automaker's twin-turbo 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, produces 375kW and 650Nm in its top form, while a slightly subdued version is good for 353kW and 550Nm.

In the case of the 353kW models, BMW added a new six-speed manual transmission to the equation, whereas the 375kW beasts are fitted with the automaker’s eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. In addition, the high-powered models will also boast the 'Competition' nameplate, which is exclusively available with the auto 'box.

BMW says that the M3/4 Competition will hit 100km/h from standstill in 3.9 seconds, whereas the standard models would need 4.2sec. The Competition models can hit those figures thanks to BMW's M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which will feature on the M3 and M4 for the first time. The 353kW models will be rear-wheel-drive (RWD), only.

BMW South Africa announced, however, that only the Competition models will make their way to our shores, meaning that no RWD or manual options are part of the equation. The carmaker did say, though, that the Competition models' setup is rear-wheel-biased and that three selectable modes are on offer: 4WD, 4WD Sport, and 2WD for pure rear-wheel-drive and deactivated stability control.

The BMW M3 Competition Sedan and M4 Competition Coupé will be introduced to the South African market in the first half of 2021.
