BMW’s first-ever 2 Series Gran Coupe arrives in South Africa and is available at local dealerships.
The 2 Series GC sports a length of 4.52m, a width of 1.8m, and stands 4.12m tall. Underlining the comprehensive size is a boot of 430L.
The 2 Series GC, interestingly, is underpinned by BMW’s front-wheel-drive system – a setup first seen on the latest BMW 1 Series.
The range
The launch models comprise of two petrol powered models, and one diesel – all turbocharged. The latter features BMW’s 2.0-litre diesel mill that produces 140kW and 400Nm of torque. This model is the 220d. In the standard 2 Series range, this engine is mated to BMW’s eight-speed automatic gearbox.
The 218i features a 1.5-litre three-cylinder motor with 103kW and 220Nm. Torque is already available at a low 1480rpm, all the way to 4200rpm. The 2 Series GC shares this engine with the new 1 Series, which is mated to a seven-speed auto ‘box.

The 235i xDrive implements a 2.0-litre petrol motor that pushes out 225kW and 450Nm. An eight-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels. And given this model’s sporty credentials, expect a 0 - 100km/h time of under five seconds, thanks to Launch Control. Top speed will, assumedly, be limited to 250km/h.
