• The 2021 BMW M5 Competition is headed for South Africa later this year.

• A more hardcore model, called the Clubsport was spotted testing at the Nürburgring.

• It follows in the footsteps of other M models fitted with the Clubsport badge.

Due to arrive in South Africa in the final quarter of 2020, the updated M5 Competition shares several visual changes with that of the facelifted 5 Series.

Under the bonnet the 460kW and 750Nm from the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine is nothing to be scoffe at. As before, the engine's characteristics can be altered between three modes: efficient, sport and sport +.

You might think that over 450kW is sufficient, however BMW disagrees and is developing a more powerful, faster Clubsport version of the M5. That name may ring a bell as we've seen the M3 CS and upcoming M2 CS

The M5 CS spied at the Nürburgring is being driven hard by test drivers and certainly looks rapid around the famous racing circuit used by manufacturers to put cars through their paces.

We're likely to see the M5 CS differentiated from the Competition model with uprated rubber and new wheels. Inside, expect more alcantara to litter the cabin. The brakes and suspension will also be tweaked to handle the extra power.

According to reports, the CS is likely to have around 480kW (20kW more) from its blown V8 with maximum torque pegged at 800Nm (50Nm more).

Do you think the CS is necessary considering how fast and powerful the Competition model is? Mail us and let us know your thoughts.
