Second-generation Suzuki Ignis launched in SA

Ignis available in GL and GLX specification

1.2-litre engine produces 61kW and 113Nm

Suzuki has launched the second-generation Ignis in South Africa. Just months after the vehicle's debut in Japan - Suzuki's home country - the little Ignis has found its way to local showroom floors.

When the Ignis first appeared three years ago, it racked up wide acclaim for what is offered at the price. So impressive was the Ignis that it was nominated as a 2018 SA Car of the Year finalist.

Of the first-gen Ignis Wheels24 editor, Janine van der Post, said: "The Ignis is a little gem of a car; its retro traits are funky, and overall it's an extremely adorable car. It comes with stop/start technology, which is a step-up from its rivals in its segment. It has loads of quirky features throughout; even its exterior styling raises eyebrows."

Trim levels

The Ignis, says Suzuki, is an SUV for the city, helped in part by its 180mm of ground clearance.

Two specification levels are on offer: GL and GLX. The GLX is the higher-specification model and features wrap-around daytime running LED headlamps, roof rails, flared wheel arches, and chrome accents on the grille. The GL and GLX models have colour-coded side mirrors, but the latter's features integrated turn signals and can fold inward electrically.

The rear seats on all the models offer 60:40 split rear seats, 260L boot space, and items such as USB and Bluetooth connectivity, multi-function steering wheels, electric windows, and an information display.

André Venter, divisional manager for sales and marketing at Suzuki Auto South Africa, says: "The new Ignis continues our practice of not making our safety and security features optional, dependent on specification level. This means that you benefit from all of our passive and active safety and security features, even if you opt for the entry-level GL specification level."

Additional features on the GLX include a touchscreen infotainment system with built-in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built in. The large touch screen doubles as a reverse camera monitor, while the reverse camera is supplemented by rear parking sensors.

The Ignis GLX will further offer customers large car luxuries such as keyless entry with a Push-button start, climate control, chrome or silver highlights on the parking brake, door handles, and shift knob.

One engine

The Ignis is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 61kW and 113Nm of torque at 4200rpm. Weighing in at a lowly 860kg, the Ignis should make light work of any commute and be light in the steering department. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, but the GLX offers an additional automated manual transmission (AMT).

The Ignis is a front-wheel drive.

The Ignis is available immediately and will be offered with a two-year/30 000km service plan and Suzuki's promotional five-year/200 000km mechanical warranty, which includes roadside assistance.

Venter concludes: "The Ignis is one of our best-selling vehicles. I believe it is because it exists in the sweet spot where our compact car and compact off-road SUV experiences meet. It is a nimble and easy-driving city vehicle but offers the space, driving experience, and ground clearance of an SUV, which is perfect for our road conditions."

Pricing:

Ignis 1.2 GL manual - R182 900

Ignis 1.2 GLX manual - R204 900

Ignis 1.2 GLX AMT - R221 900
