• The latest generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class was revealed.

• It now features rear-axle steering for better maneuverability.

• 3.0-litre V6 turbo petrol and diesel engines will be available from launch.

It might sound a cliche, but the latest Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the most technologically advanced model in its history, and that's how its always been.

Launched in 1951, more than four-million S-Class Saloons have been delivered to customers around the world, what we've come to know as the "S-Class" designation was officially introduced with the 116 series in 1972.

The German carmaker's flagship sedan now has rear-axle steering, Merc says this reduces the turning circle by up to two metres.

It boasts 10 different massage programmes and around 250 LEDs in the cabin alone. Even more impressive is that 27 languages are supported by "Hey Mercedes" voice control system and 31 loudspeakers and eight exciters are included in the Burmester high-end 4D surround sound system.

In keeping with firsts, the S-Class features the latest second generation MBUX system and has up to five OLED screens, including a large square one below the centre console for the main functions.

The driver gets to view a new 3D display allows a spatial view at the touch of a button for the first time. Mercedes says a real three-dimensional effect is achieved without having to wear 3D glasses.

There are not one, but two head-up displays (HUDs) are available. The larger HUD provides augmented reality (AR) content. The display will show animated turn-off arrows ("fishbones") are virtually and precisely projected onto the road lane.

In the assistance functions, information from things like the Active Distance Assist is shown. The image appears virtually at a distance of 10 metres. the display area corresponds to a monitor with a 195cm diagonal.

Space wise, there's more headroom for rear passengers and the wheelbase of the standard model has increased slightly to 5.1 metres.

On the engine front, a three-litre V6 petrol and diesel forced inductions will be available at launch. The petrol and high-powered diesel motors feature the 4Matic system and the petrol models use a 48-volt mild hybrid tech.

Mercedes says a plug-in hybrid model will make its way to market in 2021, but for now there are S350d, S400d and S500. Power outputs range from 270kW to 320kW for the 500 model. Don't worry, there will be AMG derivatives too.
