10 design features of the Volvo XC40 you might not have known about

Volvo has become known for its sophisticated and stunning vehicles, loaded with innovative technology and safety features that often puts it way ahead of other vehicles in the market.

The Volvo XC40 is well known and much loved in South Africa. Here are our top ten unique design features.

According to Charmagne Mavudzi, head of marketing and communications for Volvo Car South Africa, these features are one of many reasons why South Africans are buying the XC40. "For many, this model is a point of entry into the luxury sports utility vehicle (SUV) market. These design features hold significant appeal for motorists who are looking for a car that matches their fast-paced, city-orientated lifestyle."

1. Optional white roof

Lots of SUVs have a so-called “floating roof” today. It's the not-so-subtle effect of blacking out the SUV's D-pillar that – supposedly – makes the roof look like it's floating above the body. Volvo didn’t do that. Instead, it offered a white roof, which even stretches down the XC40's A-pillars to the base of the windshield.

2. Designer tag

The XC40 boasts a Swedish flag that sticks out where the vehicle’s clamshell bonnet and fender meet; it really makes a statement.

3. Thor's Hammer

A headlight feature common to all Volvos, the T-shaped LED lights throw off a big and bright pattern, which looks killer to oncoming traffic.

4. White wheels

Paired with the matching white roof and side-view mirrors, it's the perfect accompaniment to a perfect two-tone paint job.

5. Scandinavian interior

Volvo has a history of exceptional interior design, and the XC40 continues that tradition with its delightfully unique choice of materials. Think leather, soft-touch plastic surfaces, aluminium grid inlays, savvy storage compartments … and sheer minimalism.

6. Larger-than-life infotainment screen

Unlike so many other screens, it’s vertical – and it’s 9.3 inches in size. So, it’s crystal clear. It’s also effortless to use.

7. The tailgate

It raises itself at the touch of a button on either the dashboard or the key fob. When you're done, closing it is equally as simple; just press a button on the underside of the tailgate. Alternatively, move your foot under the rear bumper to open or close it automatically.

8. The headrest fold

This button can be found on the infotainment screen; press it and the headrests in the second row fall forward, so they don't block the driver’s view through the rear window.

9. Air-ventilated woofer

The Harman Karden sound system includes a unique air-ventilated woofer that delivers precise, powerful sound.

10. Wireless charging for your mobile phone. Gone are messy cords; pop the phone onto the induction pad … and voila … it starts charging.
