German firepower! 336kW for Mercedes-AMG's new E 53 coupé and cabriolet

accreditation

Mercedes-Benz has revealed two new models in the closing stages of May 2020, that being the E-Class coupé and cabriolet, as well as the E 53 AMG 4Matic+, also in coupé and cabriolet guises.

The E53 is the model that will perhaps garner the most interest, given that is the first foray into the Mercedes-AMG world for prospective E-Class owners, bar the more-hardcore 63 models.

Tobias Moers, chairman over Mercedes-AMG, says: "Following the saloon and estate, our new E 53 4Matic+ models also offer a perfect synthesis of performance, elegance, and comfort as a coupé and cabriolet.

"With specific measures on the exterior and in the interior, we have re-sharpened the brand identity somewhat, and we are continuing to drive forward the revision of our entire E-Class family successively."

336kW of total system output

Mercedes-AMG's 53 range implements electric power to accompany to the internal combustion engine. The petrol engine alone, a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit, develops an impressive 320kW and 520Nm. The additional electric compressor produces an extra 16kW and 250Nm, bringing total system output to 336kW and 770Nm.

As the car's name further suggests, power is sent to all four wheels via the automaker's all-wheel-drive system, which allows for a 0-100km/h time of 4.4 seconds. The 4Matic+ system also allows for drive to be sent to only the rear wheels. Top speed is rated at 250km/h but increases to 270km/h with the optional AMG Driver's Package.

Merc's nine-speed automatic transmission finds its way to the E 53, which, according to Mercedes-AMG, "impresses with extremely short shift times, fast response to shift paddle commands, a double-declutching function, and multiple downshifts."

Revised steering wheel

The E 53's exterior reminds strongly of that of the CLS 53 AMG, bringing the car's in line with one another and 'uniting' the 53 family. The interior also sees a raft of AMG touches being added, ensuring that the cockpit portrays the strong AMG-DNA the car is gifted with.

While this is all grand, Mercedes-AMG used the opportunity to fit its latest-generation steering wheel. Marketed as 'light' and with a 'closer link between human and machine,' the new AMG Performance steering wheel is said to feature a host of technologies that aid the driving experience.

The steering wheel cover, for instance, can be covered in leather, microfiber, or a combination of the two, and can be requested with a heating function. A built-in function will recognise if a driver's hands are not on the steering wheel and will activate Emergency Brake Assist when inactivity continues.

Paddles to change gears with are mounted behind the steering wheel.

Details on the car's South African arrival will be made available closer to the time.
