Hyundai has launched its new third-generation Grand i10 in South Africa. The car, which started life as the i10, first arrived in South Africa in 2007, followed by the second-generation in 2013. Now called the Grand i10, the car quickly established itself as a strong seller for the Korean automaker and would regularly count itself among the ten top-selling passenger cars in South Africa every month.
While the third generation has been around since 2019, Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdown meant several new cars could not be launched when they were supposed to, including the Grand i10.
Now with more space and an improved overall package, the new Grand i10 hopes to pick up where the outgoing model left off.
Identifying the models
The new Grand i10 is available in two trim levels, Motion and Fluid. The Motion gives owners a basic, yet comprehensive, package, while the Fluid adds several items to the equation. The Fluid has daytime-running LEDs that are incorporated in the grille, with chrome bars running diagonally across it. A chrome edge runs around the grille on both models, but the Fluid features front fog lamps as standard.
The Fluid also features an alloy rim, whereas the Motion has a steel rim with a plastic cover. Just behind the rear door, 'G-i10' lettering has been brought onto the D pillar. Indicators on the side mirrors, as well as side mirror heating, are standard on the Fluid.
Inside, the Fluid model has a multifunction steering wheel, a multimedia system that's Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible, as well as rear air vents and a rear power socket. The upholstery is decked in artificial leather.
In terms of size, the new Grand i10 is 40mm (now 3805mm) longer than the outgoing model, as well as 20mm wider (1680mm) and 10mm lower (1510mm).

Two engines
Two motors make up the engine line-up, comprising three and four cylinders. The 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit offers 49kW and 94Nm, while the 1.2-litre has 61kW and 114Nm at its disposal. Both engines are mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic transmission.
At the launch, Hyundai had the 1.0-litre Fluid manual on offer and said this engine accounted for 80% of Grand i10 sales. Understandably, the gearbox must be worked for the engine to provide sufficient levels of performance, but it is unlikely that prospective owners will wring the engine by its neck. Regardless, the car drives adequately in and around the city, which is where it's likely to spend most of its time.
Hyundai claims a fuel economy from as little as 5.4 litres/100km.

In summary
The Grand i10 range has a starting price of R191 900, retailing up to R256 900. The car, across the line-up, offers good value for money (on paper, at least) and has an interior that has improved vastly over the outgoing model.
Prospective buyers will appreciate the Grand i10's offering, and it should come as little surprise that this city car will continue its run as a popular car in the South African carpool.
