• These are the most sought after motorsport helmets in the world.

• From Formula 1 to MotoGP and the World Rally Championship, these are the helmets people search for the most.

• The list features Michael Schumacher's 2003 scarlet helmet and Valentino Rossi's 2009 helmet.

There have been many momentous occasions in top motorsport athletes lives.

From Formula 1 to MotoGP and the World Rally Championship, there have been some formidable performances over the years. And the one thing they all have in common is this: a helmet.

Helmets are not only mandatory, they protect the driver and can serve as a piece of memorabilia from the winning race or championship. Some motorsport fanatics are fascinated by sporting memorabilia and a good example of that is Peter Vardy.

The wealthy UK businessman mainly has interests in the automotive retail space and more than 10 years ago had an estimated fortune of close to R3-billion.

His team have researched and looked at what the most sought after helmets are in the world. They've earmarked helmets from F1, MotoGP and the World Rally Championship.

Which drivers helmets do you think are the most desirable? Well, we won't keep you in the dark any further.

The top tier of motor racing in the world is of course F1, and that's where we'll start our list of the most iconic racing helmets. The list consists of three world champions with a combined 14 world titles, namely Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel.

The first helmet is that of a man widely considered to be the greatest F1 driver of all time, Ayrton Senna. The Brazilian's yellow helmet from the 1991 season when he won his last championship with McLaren garners around 7000 searches per year, according to Peter Vardy Newsroom.

Second on the list is Michael Schumacher's scarlet Ferrari helmet from 2003. This helmet was worn by the German when he won his seventh title and broke Juan Manuel Fangio's record that stood for 46 years.

Lewis Hamilton is currently one drivers' title away from equaling Schumacher's record. The Briton recently equaled Schumacher's record number of 91 race wins.

The third helmet on the list is another German, Sebastian Vettel. The helmet features a Red Bull logo, which is also the name of the team that Vettel won four championships in a row.

This particular helmet from 2010 Vettel wore when he won the season finale and battled against three other drivers to win his first of four world titles.

MotoGP

The name Valentino Rossi is synonymous with MotoGP. The 41-year-old Italian is widely considered one of the greatest motorcycle riders of all time and has seven premier titles to his name, the most of any rider.

Rossi's helmet from 2009 is from a race when 'The Doctor' beat his Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo on the final corner of the last lap of the Catalunya grand prix. It was a dramatic last gasp victory that set Rossi on his way to winning his seventh and last title.

The second helmet from MotoGP is a man who has just one less title than Rossi. Spanish rider Marc Marquez effectively took over from Rossi as the dominant force in MotoGP and despite only being 27-years-old the Honda rider has six premier class titles to his name.

Marquez's 2013 helmet was worn in his debut MotoGP season, the same season in which he incredibly one his first premier class title and became the youngest ever champion.

And finally in the MotoGP category is finished off by multiple world champion Giacomo Agostini whose helmet from 1975 is the third most sought after.

Agostini green and brown helmet was the one he wore when he won his eight 500cc title in 1975. The Italian was named an FIM Legend in 2010 for his achievement in the sport.

And finally we have the rally drivers. This list features three men who are synonymous with the sport: Sebastien Loeb, Colin McRae and Sebastien Ogier.

Loeb is the most successful driver in the WRC history with nine consecutive titles. The French driver's helmet from his last title-winning season in 2012 is the most sought after in WRC.

It's followed by McRae's 1995 helmet when he became the youngest ever WRC champion after narrowly beating Subaru teammate Carlos Sainz by five points.

And the most recent helmet is that French driver Ogier when he won his first first championship and then went onto win five more in a row.
