Jagger Robertson victorious as Liqui Moly INEX Legends entertains Midvaal crowd

Midvaal Raceway in Meyerton, South Africa saw three of the main protagonists in the 2019 Liqui Moly INEX Legends championship share the race victories during an entertaining third round.

It was the youngest competitor in the field, Jagger Robertson who took the honours on the day on Saturday, March 23. This he achieved with one race victory and two further podium finishes despite having to work his way through the field.

The morning’s draw for the Race 1 grid saw Justin Robertson line up in pole position from where he took a flag-to-flag win. Jagger Robertson drew 11th position from where he briskly worked his way to third place in the running order by Lap 3; where after he and Willie Erasmus engaged in an entertaining tussle for the runner-up position. The Robertsons made it a father and son one-two with Erasmus finishing in third position.

Further back Sean Moore finished in fourth place while keeping Chris Hoy and Richard van Heerde behind him. This battle initially also featured Ian Upton who started in third position, but a racing incident between himself and Moore relegated him to the back of the field and a lap down.

Jason Loosemore was another strong contended during the early stages of the race but retired on Lap 3 after the oil pressure on his INEX Legend started to drop.

The afternoon’s second race saw Jagger Robertson starting in pole position on grid inverted from the morning’s draw. The race was however red-flagged on the opening lap following an incident between Andre Larsson and championship debutant Danielle Loosmore. Larsson spun on the exit of the right-handed sweep at the end of the long back straight; leaving him parked sideways on the racing line and in the path for Loosemore.

There were however no injuries and both drivers were ready to compete in the day’s final race. Following the restart, it was Jagger Robertson who took a flag-to-flag win ahead of Erasmus. Jason Loosemore was back in running behind the wheel of a spare car which he already set up during Friday’s practice sessions.

He rounded out the podium ahead of Justin Robertson. Hoy held off Johan van de Venter and Ian Upton to finish in fifth place.

The afternoon’s third race saw the customary grid formation based on an inverted order of the points scored for the day. Larsson and Jason Loosemore headed up the field.

Loosemore soon made his way into the lead with the rest of pack jostling for position. Erasmus emerged as the main challenger while recording a host of flying laps to eat into Loosemore’s lead.

On Lap 8 Erasmus took the lead, but in the closing stages of the race Loosmore repassed him to take the victory by 0.185 of a second. Jagger Robertson again had to work his way through the field from 11th place on the grid to finish in third position; just ahead of 10th place starter Justin Robertson. Hoy completed his trio of fifth place finishes ahead of Upton.

Jagger Robertson took the overall win for the day with Erasmus in second place. Justin Robertson rounded out the podium ahead of Hoy. Van de Venter’s strong form in the midfield saw him taking fifth place while Morne Roux ended the day in sixth place.

Justin Robertson took the Masters Class win ahead of Van de Venter and Roux. Willie Erasmus won the Professional Class with Hoy and Jason Loosemore as runners-up. In the Semi-Professional Class Jagger Robertson took the win ahead of Bruce Gomes and Danielle Loosemore.

Justin Robertson retained the lead of the championship following the day’s racing, but now finds himself only five points clear of Erasmus. Jagger Robertson and Jason Loosemore now occupies the third and fourth places respectively. Unlike the rest of the leading quartet, Erasmus is the only one not to record a win in 2019 thus far; a testimony of his consistency at the top of the order.
