Cape Town - Red Bull driver Max Verstappen denies his 2020 season goals are too lofty despite finishing 135 points behind champion Lewis Hamilton.
The Dutchman finished P3 in the 2019 Drivers’ Championship, though next season he has his sights set on trying to deny Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes a seventh title.
But the key to that is creating a car which can compete for wins straight away in 2020, considering Red Bull have traditionally been slow starters.
“The package this year in the beginning was a bit of a struggle,” he told Crash.net. “We could not really fight for victories and real podiums.
“So it was all about trying to be as consistent as we could be, so we just hoped we can be more competitive next year.
“We know that we need to be more competitive from the start to be able to fight for the title and we have to put all our effort into that. It’s not going to be easy but we are going to go for it and try everything we can.”
Verstappen’s Red Bull deal is up after 2020 and as revealed by Lewis Hamilton, the Dutchman has been calling Mercedes boss Toto Wolff about a 2021 drive.
And although he accepts 2020 is an “important” year for his future, Verstappen doesn’t think it’s “wishful thinking” to trust Red Bull to deliver next season.
“I think they have shown in the past they can do it, so it’s not just wishful thinking. It’s not easy as the competition is very strong,” he said.
“But we are going to try everything next year because it’s going to be an important year and then we will see what happens.”
