SEE | The top 5 craziest moments of the Brazilian Grand Prix

The drivers championship might be wrapped up already but this past week's Brazilian Grand Prix was nothing short of dramatic and action-packed.

Max Verstappen started on pole and that's where he finished the race, his third victory of the season, and eighth overall, but that was only one of the highlights.

On the edge of your seat

Perhaps the most surprising was the fact that Toro Rosso driver Pierre Gasly and McLaren's Carlos Sainz clinched their first podium places in Formula 1, finishing second and third respectively, albeit due to a time penalty which saw Lewis Hamilton move down the order, bumping Sainz up.

Ferrari just can't seem to get things going. Both Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc failed to finish the race as they tangled with one another on lap 66, to the team's frustration as both cars suffered punctures due to light contact.

Here are some of the moments from Sunday's race:

1. Verstappen secures his third win of the season

When all was said and done, it was Red Bull driver Max Verstappen then walked away from the race as winner. He qualified on pole and it remained that way through to the end, but not without drama, and nor would the result have been achieved if it was not for his aggressive driving style and hunger to win.

The win was only Verstappen's third in a season that was dominated by Mercedes, and Lewis Hamilton in particular. Red Bull will be aiming to end the season on a high with the final race taking place in Abu Dhabi next month.

2. Pierre Gasly finishes in second

It was a day of surprises in Brazil with two unlikely drivers claiming podium spots. No one could have predicted that Toro Rosso's Pierre Gasly would have finished second.

"It’s the best day of my life. As a kid, you dream of being in F1 and when it happens, it becomes the best day of your life. Then you dream of your first podium," the Frenchman told the Formula 1 official site.

3. Carlos Sainz claims his first F1 podium

Just like Gasly, Carlos Sainz also secured an unexpected spot on the podium, finishing third behind the Frenchman, his first in Formula 1 and one he will definitely treasure. The position might have come due to Hamilton's demotion off the podium, but it was a spot well-deserved by the Spaniard.

4. Both Ferrari's crash out

The issues at Ferrari seem to be mounting every race day, with the latest on show in Brazil as both drivers failed to complete the race due to a coming together on the 66th lap.

Charles Leclerc crept up behind Sebastian Vettel getting ready to pass him down through into Turn 1, only for the slightest of touches to puncture both cars and see the team's contention for points and a podium place vanish into the air.

5. Robert Kubica's block on Verstappen in the pits

The last thing you want to do is make Max Verstappen angry. Just ask Esteban Ocon who collided with the Dutch driver at the same circuit last year, resulting in a physical altercation.

This time around it was departing Williams driver Robert Kubica, swerving in front of Verstappen in the pit lane as he was making his way out after a quick tyre change. Kubica received a 5-second penalty for this.
