SPIED: Reader spots new Polo GTI in Jeffreys Bay

Jeffreys Bay - Earlier in June 2017, Volkswagen debuted its new Polo and Polo GTI.

The new model sports an entirely new exterior design, more spacious interior, new cockpit and the range will include the addition of a TGI (natural gas) engine.

Volkswagen's new Polo GTI: Details and pics

The next-generation Polo is set to be launched locally in 2018.

Volkswagen SA says: "The new Polo GTI will be launched in SA early in 2018 and we can confirm that tests are being conducted and VWSA might even build the car here locally."

Wheels24 Reader Tiaan Fölscher spotted the new Polo in Jeffreys Bay:

I spotted the Polo parked in front of a guesthouse at Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay. At first I was not sure if it's indeed the new Polo as I've only seen images online and it's only due to arrive in SA next year.

And even in GTI form.

I took a few snaps with my cellphone, reflections were terrible so I couldn't get a proper image of the interior. At first glance I'm really impressed by the new Polo. More evolution than revolution as they say but I'm a big VW fan, so not at all objective.

The rearlights remind me of the previous BMW 1 Series but not in a bad way as it's still easily recognizable as a Polo. The optional 18" looks great and gives the compact hatch a purposeful stance.

The only difference upfront was that the red GTI-line does not run into the headlights as previous images suggest. It only runs the length of the grille and I like that.

The interior looks top-notch, as expected. New TFT Digital Instrument Dials adds a sense of occasion as well as the Golf GTI steering wheel. DSG lever is in place. This car had a red insert in front of the passenger on the dash as well, adding a sporty touch without being too brash.

There was a heap of wires protruding from underneath the dash, out of the passenger footwell. Can't imagine it's a test car so late in the game with no camouflage. But who knows...

I'm a sucker for understated cars, hiding their performance credentials from most of the public. This new GTI looks classically understated and I bet it will once again be the best all-rounder in its segment.
