Bloemfontein - When heavy rain poured down over Bloemfontein earlier in February, Leander Pienaar made the best out of torrid weather; he strapped on a pair of skiis, attached himself to a Land Rover and went water skiing through streets.
Videos captured his impromptu ski session through Bloemfontein's flooded streets.
Happy for the rain
Pienaar, owner of JetSport, a lifestyle and adventure shop in Bloemfontein, took to his local streets when his city received some much-needed rain following the the hot, dry SA summer.
Pienaar told Wheels24 said: "It was raining so lekker in Bloemfontein and we were so happy about it, so I told my friend that we have to celebrate!"
Pienaar is an avid skier and eventually turned his hobby into his job. Although he is trained in various water sports, the stunt can pose a danger to other road users.
Pienaar added: "We know there are negative comments but it really doesn't bother us. There are people who will not be happy with what we've done but I have to say that 98% of the people are laughing at the video.
"We didn't even set out to make a video! We just went for the heck of it. So people stopped and hooted and waved at us, asking if we can do it again so that they can film us. And the next thing I knew it was going viral! So ja, it is rather overwhelming."

Arrive Alive's Johan Jonck noted: "This is a clip of someone enjoying the rain perhaps a bit too much. The skiing looks like a lot of fun - unfortunately this is not to be condoned from a road safety perspective, as it could be seen as reckless driving when towing a skier on a public road.
"Even though this is a very experienced skier it is not something to be tried as it is EXTREMELY dangerous with a tarred road beneath a small amount of water!"
