5 cheapest double-cab bakkies in SA

accreditation

Cape Town - If your budget can’t stretch to the amounts listed by the premium double-cabs in our '5 most expensive bakkies in SA' list, there are a few other options to choose from at a much cheaper price.

Unsurprisingly, the majority of "cheap" double-cabs in SA belong to either Chinese or Indian automakers; the GWM Steed 5 2.2 double-cab MPi is the cheapest at R189 900.

At this price it is the only double-cab in the South African bakkie market for less than R200 000.

It's important to note that none of the five double-cabs in the below list will have the refinement of the bakkies in the aforementioned list but they do have one major advantage; they're cheap.

Here are five cheap double-cabs in SA:

1 GWM Steed 5 2.2 double cab MPi base - R189 900 (excludes special 10-year anniversary discount)

Though the Steed 5 has been built as a workhorse, the double-cab derivatives have a slightly more "leisure" aspect. Priced from R189 900 the Steed 5 double-cab is not as plush as its Steed 5E nor Steed 6 brethren but it's the cheapest way to own a double-cab in SA.

2 Mahindra Bolero 2.5 TD double cab 4x4 - R207 995

A solid top 10 contender when double-cab sales are tallied at the end of each month, the Bolero has come to be popular among South African farmers. It's not as fancy nor as good looking as some of the other bakkies featured but it is formidable and not afraid to get its tyres dirty.

3 JMC Boarding 2.8 TD double cab Lux - R209 880

Like the Steed 5 the JMC Boarding is a bakkie built for a utilitarian role, suited for life on a farm of construction site. It has features such as aircon and power steering that has become the norm in bakkies in recent years.

4 GWM Steed 5E 2.4 double cab SX - R234 900 (excludes special 10-year anniversary discount)

The Steed 5E offers more luxury and comfort compared to the Steed 5. For less than R240 000, its interior is slightly more suited to family needs and seats that are comfortable for long distance trips. If the Steed 6 is still out of reach then this is the bakkie to choose within the GWM camp.

5 JMC Vigus 2.4 double cab LX - R249 990

When it comes to looks then the Vigus can compete with just about any bakkie in SA. Its smooth lines underline its credentials as a bakkie targeted at the affordable, lifestyle bakkie market. But if you pay close attention to its styling, you may pick-up that it shares similarities with the previous generation Mazda BT-50, or even VW Amarok...
