Cape Town - Thousands of motorists are killed each year along South Africa's roads but which routes are the most dangerous in the country?

The Road Traffic Management Corporation has released a list of high-accident routes in SA. We've included a map of the high-risk routes at the end of this article.

'Killer roads in South Africa'

The RTMC said: "South Africa's road safety record remains unacceptably high with about 14 000 people losing their lives per annum as a result of road crashes. 

"Through careful analysis of accidents reports, the RTMC has identified routes that are responsible for most fatal crashes in all provinces. The following are among other routes identified as killer roads in South Africa."

The RTMC says: "We are warning motorist to exercise extreme caution when travelling in these routes as they are considered high accident zones. And contribute to the high rate of fatalities."

The RTMC said: "Driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to wear seatbelt, using cell-phones while driving, excessive speeding, disregarding road conditions and signs are some of the driving behaviour that contributed to these road deaths."
