Porsche debuts new four-seat, battery sedan

Frankfurt, Germany - Porsche is introducing its first battery-powered four-seat sports car at the 2015 Frankfurt auto show.

The important numbers; It has four doors, four seats, capable of 440kW and has a range for more than 500km.

The Mission E uses an all-wheel drive system, can sprint to 100km in less than 3.5 seconds and recharges in a claimed time of 15 minutes to reach 80% electric charge. The 200km/h mark is hit in less 12 seconds.

Eye-tracking and gesture control

The infotainment system can be activated by eye-tracking and gesture control, with some controls using holograms – highly oriented toward the driver by automatically adjusting the displays to the driver's position.

The drive system of the Mission E is new, using two permanent synchronous motors (PSM) – similar to those used by the 2015 Le Mans victor, the 919 hybrid. Porsche says its Mission E lapped the North Loop of the Nürburgring in under eight-minutes.

Its wheels are made from carbon-fibre with wide tyres mounted on 21" alloys at the front and 22" at the rear.

Four seats

The Mission E is fitted with lightweight, racing seats.

The sedan uses an eye-tracking system which detects, via camera, which instrument the driver is viewing. The driver can then activate the menu of the instrument in focus by pushing a button on the steering wheel and navigate in it.

The display follows the seat position and body attitude of the driver in what is known as a parallax effect. If the driver sits lower, higher or leans to one side, the 3D display of the round instruments reacts and moves with the driver. According to Porsche, this eliminates situations in which the steering wheel blocks the driver's view of certain key information.

Touch-free gesture control

The dashboard is divided into two, three-dimensional layers. The upper layer blends the driver's display and between the levels there is a holographic display that extends to the passenger's side.

The display shows applications which the driver or passenger can use via touch-free control to use functions such as media, navigation, climate control and contacts.
